Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Siraitia grosvenorii is a perennial vine from the Cucurbitaceae family, native to southern China and widely known as "monk fruit" or "luo han guo." The dried fruit and its extracts are used both as a natural sweetener—due to intensely sweet triterpenoid glycosides called mogrosides (especially mogroside V)—and in traditional Chinese medicine. Its main active components include triterpenoids (mogrosides), flavonoids, polysaccharides, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. Siraitia grosvenorii has been traditionally used for coughs, sore throat, phlegm reduction, asthma relief, constipation treatment and as a lung tonic. Modern research supports additional pharmacological effects such as anti-inflammatory activity; antioxidant properties; hypoglycemic (glucose-lowering) effects; lipid-lowering actions; immunomodulatory activity; antibacterial effects against oral pathogens; anti-fatigue benefits; neuroprotective potential including anti-Parkinson’s and anti-schizophrenic activities; anticancer properties; and prevention of dental caries. It is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the US FDA for use as a food additive/sweetener[1][2][3][4][5][8].
