Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Siraitia grosvenorii extract, also known as monk fruit extract, is a natural substance derived from the fruit of the Siraitia grosvenorii vine. It is primarily known for its high content of mogrosides, which serve as non-caloric sweeteners. Beyond its use in the food industry, the extract is being researched for therapeutic applications in respiratory conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It demonstrates anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathways, thereby reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and the infiltration of inflammatory cells like neutrophils and T cells into the airways. It also shows potential as an expectorant by increasing mucus secretion and regulating TRP channels (TRPV1 and TRPA1) involved in airway hyperresponsiveness.
