siRNA (GAL-3) refers to small interfering RNA molecules designed to specifically silence the expression of Galectin-3 (encoded by the LGALS3 gene). Galectin-3 is a beta-galactoside-binding protein involved in various cellular processes, including cell growth, adhesion, and apoptosis. In the context of oncology, particularly glioblastoma, GAL-3 is often overexpressed and associated with tumor progression and resistance to therapy. By targeting GAL-3 mRNA for degradation, these siRNAs reduce GAL-3 protein levels, which has been shown in preclinical models to inhibit glioblastoma stem cell proliferation, induce cell cycle arrest in the G1 phase, and enhance the sensitivity of tumor cells to chemotherapeutic agents like temozolomide.
