Overview

Sirolimus, also known as rapamycin, is a macrocyclic lactone antibiotic and immunosuppressant originally isolated from the bacterium Streptomyces hygroscopicus. It acts primarily as an inhibitor of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), a serine/threonine kinase that regulates cell growth, proliferation, and survival. Sirolimus is used to prevent organ rejection in patients receiving kidney transplants (typically in combination with other immunosuppressants) and to treat lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), a rare lung disease. It is also available in topical formulations for certain dermatological conditions such as facial angiofibroma[2][3][4][5][7].
