Overview
Sitagliptin is an oral antidiabetic medication used to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus. It belongs to the class of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. Sitagliptin works by competitively inhibiting the DPP-4 enzyme responsible for breaking down incretin hormones such as GLP-1 and GIP. By preventing their breakdown, sitagliptin increases insulin secretion and decreases glucagon release in a glucose-dependent manner. This helps lower blood sugar levels without causing significant hypoglycemia or weight gain. Sitagliptin is typically prescribed alongside diet and exercise and may be combined with other antidiabetic agents when monotherapy is insufficient.
