Sitz-Markers are radiopaque markers used as a diagnostic tool to evaluate gastrointestinal motility and colonic transit time. They are particularly utilized in clinical settings to assess the return of bowel function following colorectal surgery or to diagnose conditions like chronic constipation and colonic inertia. The markers, typically contained within a gelatin capsule, are swallowed by the patient, and their progression through the digestive tract is monitored using serial abdominal X-rays. By visualizing the distribution and retention of these markers in the colon, clinicians can objectively determine the speed and efficiency of bowel movements.
