Sizofiran is a soluble beta-D-glucan polysaccharide produced by the fungus Schizophyllum commune. It acts as an immunostimulant and biological response modifier, primarily used as an adjunct in cancer therapy. Sizofiran stimulates the immune system by increasing cytokine production, activating macrophages and Langerhans cells, and enhancing the activity of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PML) and natural killer (NK) cells. It has been marketed for cervical cancer in South Korea and Japan, often used alongside radiation therapy. Sizofiran was developed by Kaken Pharmaceutical[2][3][4]. Its antitumor effects have been most notable in cervical cancer; it has also been investigated for other cancers such as head and neck cancer but was found ineffective against gastric cancer[3]. The drug is classified as a beta-glucan immunomodulator.
