Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sj97 vaccine is an experimental recombinant protein subunit vaccine candidate designed to protect against schistosomiasis japonica, a zoonotic disease caused by the parasitic flatworm *Schistosoma japonicum*. The vaccine targets Sj97 (paramyosin), a 97 kDa myofibrillar protein found in the muscle layers, tegument, and secretory glands of the parasite. Paramyosin plays critical roles in parasite structure, muscle tension, and immune evasion, such as inhibiting complement activation and binding host IgG. By inducing host immune responses, particularly Th2-type cytokine and IgE antibody responses, the vaccine aims to reduce worm burden and egg production. It is being developed both as a human therapeutic candidate and as a transmission-blocking veterinary vaccine for reservoir hosts like water buffaloes (carabaos).
