Overview

SJCAR19 is an investigational autologous chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy developed for the treatment of relapsed or refractory CD19-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), primarily in pediatric and young adult patients. The therapy involves collecting a patient's own T cells, genetically engineering them ex vivo to express a CAR that specifically targets the CD19 molecule on B cells, and then reinfusing these modified cells into the patient. Upon administration, these CAR-T cells recognize and bind to CD19-expressing tumor cells, leading to their selective destruction. The vector backbone and manufacturing process of SJCAR19 have been optimized compared to earlier FDA-approved products with similar mechanisms, aiming for improved safety and persistence in vivo[1][3][6][7]. Clinical trials are ongoing at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
