Drug intelligence / Profile preview
SjHDM-1 (Schistosoma japonicum helminth defense molecule 1) is a trematode-specific immunomodulatory protein secreted by the adult Schistosoma japonicum parasite. It acts as a helminth innate immune cell modulator, exhibiting biochemical and functional properties similar to the human host defense peptide cathelicidin. SjHDM-1 is localized to the tegument of adult worms and is a component of their excretory/secretory products. It has been investigated as a potential vaccine candidate for Schistosomiasis japonica (infection by S. japonicum). Preclinical studies in mice showed that vaccination with recombinant SjHDM-1 (rSjHDM-1) did not confer protection against cercarial challenge, and longitudinal cohort studies in humans indicated that high levels of anti-SjHDM-1 IgG antibodies do not predict resistance to reinfection but are instead associated with increased inflammation, hepatomegaly, and decreased nutritional status.
