Overview

SK-0503 is a sustained-release intravitreal implant of dexamethasone developed by Sanwa Kagaku Kenkyusho. It was primarily investigated for the treatment of macular edema secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO). As a corticosteroid, dexamethasone acts as an agonist of the glucocorticoid receptor, leading to the suppression of inflammatory cytokines, stabilization of the blood-retinal barrier, and reduction of vascular permeability. The program reached Phase 2/3 development in Japan (notably trial jRCT2080221159) but was discontinued by the developer in 2022 due to strategic business considerations.
