Overview

Skimmianine is a furoquinoline alkaloid primarily found in plants of the Rutaceae family. It exhibits analgesic, antispastic, sedative, and anti-inflammatory properties. Skimmianine acts as a strong acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor (IC50 = 8.6 μg/mL), which may contribute to its neuroprotective and immunomodulatory effects. It has also shown cytotoxicity against various cancer cell lines and genotoxicity in preclinical studies. The compound inhibits neuroinflammation by targeting the NF-κB activation pathway in microglia and protects neurons from toxicity induced by microglia-conditioned media[1][3][7].
