Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Skullcap refers to several plants in the genus Scutellaria, primarily *Scutellaria lateriflora* (American skullcap) and *Scutellaria baicalensis* (Chinese skullcap). Skullcap is traditionally used as a herbal remedy for **anxiety, insomnia, headaches, nervous tension**, and as an *antispasmodic* and *nervous system tonic*[1][3]. The leaves, stems, and flowers of American skullcap are typically used, while the roots of Chinese skullcap are favored in Asian medicine[2]. The plant contains numerous flavonoids (notably **baicalin**, **wogonin**, and **scutellarein**) which act as antioxidants and are believed to modulate **gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors**, resulting in **calming, mood-enhancing, anti-inflammatory, and anticonvulsant** effects[2][3][4]. Skullcap is available as dietary supplements—capsules, tinctures, teas, and powders. Although used in herbal practice for neuroprotection (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s), anticonvulsant effects, and cardiovascular support, robust clinical evidence for these uses is limited, and effects are mostly supported by in vitro and animal studies[2][4].
