Overview

SL052 is a synthetic hypocrellin derivative that functions as both a photosensitizer and a sonosensitizer, developed by Quest PharmaTech as part of its SonoLight technology platform. The compound is a small molecule derived from hypocrellin, a substance isolated from a parasitic fungus found on bamboo trees. SL052 remains inactive in the body until it is triggered by specific wavelengths of laser light (Photodynamic Therapy) or ultrasound (Sonodynamic Therapy). Upon activation, the drug generates reactive oxygen species, specifically oxygen radicals, which are cytotoxic to tumor cells. Beyond direct tumor cell killing, SL052 has demonstrated potential as an immunostimulant, potentially enhancing the efficacy of immunotherapies in solid tumors. It has been evaluated in Phase I clinical trials for the treatment of localized prostate cancer.
