Overview

Slippery elm bark, derived from the inner bark of the *Ulmus rubra* tree, is a traditional herbal remedy primarily used for its demulcent properties. It contains a high concentration of mucilage, which, when mixed with water, forms a gel-like substance that can coat and soothe irritated mucous membranes in the gastrointestinal tract. It is frequently investigated for its potential benefits in treating inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and intestinal barrier dysfunction (leaky gut). Clinical studies have explored its use both as a standalone ingredient and as part of multi-herb formulations to improve stool consistency and reduce symptoms like bloating and abdominal pain. Historically, it was also used in the manufacture of bougies for medical procedures.
