Overview

SLV339 is an investigational recombinant microbial lipase that was developed by Solvay Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI) associated with chronic pancreatitis. As a recombinant enzyme replacement therapy, SLV339 was designed to facilitate the digestion of dietary fats by hydrolyzing triglycerides into monoglycerides and free fatty acids within the gastrointestinal tract. Unlike conventional pancreatic enzyme replacement therapies (PERTs) derived from porcine pancreata, SLV339 is produced via microbial fermentation, potentially offering better stability and a non-animal source. The drug reached Phase 2 clinical development (NCT00630279), where it was evaluated for its ability to improve fat absorption in patients with PEI, but development appears to have ceased following the acquisition of Solvay Pharmaceuticals by Abbott Laboratories in 2010.
