SM-001 is an investigational new drug formulated as a hot water decoction of two Peruvian plants, Banisteriopsis caapi and Psychotria viridis. It represents a standardized modern formulation of the ancient Amazonian botanical medicine, "ayahuasca." The drug contains several active biomarkers, including dimethyltryptamine, harmine, tetrahydroharmine, and harmaline, which are responsible for its psychoactive and therapeutic effects. It is currently being investigated for its potential in treating Major Depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
