Sm14 is a recombinant protein vaccine candidate developed for the prevention and control of human schistosomiasis, a major neglected tropical disease. The vaccine is based on a 14 kDa fatty acid-binding protein (FABP) from *Schistosoma mansoni*, which plays a critical role in the parasite's lipid metabolism. Because this protein is highly conserved among different *Schistosoma* species, Sm14 is intended to provide cross-protection against both *S. mansoni* and *S. haematobium*. The vaccine is typically formulated with GLA-SE, a synthetic Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) agonist (Glucopyranosyl Lipid A) in a squalene emulsion, to enhance the induction of protective Th1-type immune responses. Developed by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) in Brazil, Sm14 has successfully completed Phase 1 and Phase 2 clinical trials in Brazil and Senegal, demonstrating a favorable safety profile and high immunogenicity in both healthy and previously infected adults and children.
