Overview

The "sm14 antigen + GLA" is a recombinant protein-based vaccine candidate developed for the prevention of schistosomiasis and fasciolosis. The vaccine consists of the 14 kDa fatty acid-binding protein (Sm14) from Schistosoma mansoni combined with the synthetic adjuvant glucopyranosyl lipid A in a squalene emulsion (GLA-SE). Sm14 is designed to induce protective immunity by stimulating both humoral and cellular immune responses, including robust production of anti-Sm14 IgG antibodies and Th1-type cytokines such as IFN-γ, TNFα, and IL-2. The addition of GLA-SE enhances these immune responses by promoting Th1 polarization. Clinical trials have demonstrated that this combination is safe and highly immunogenic in both adults and children living in endemic regions. The primary indication for this vaccine is the prevention of schistosomiasis; it also has potential as a bivalent anthelmintic vaccine targeting fasciolosis[1][2][3][5].
