Overview

Mesenchymal stem cell-derived small extracellular vesicles (MSC-sEVs), also known as exosomes, are membrane-bound particles ranging from 30 to 120 nm in diameter that carry a diverse cargo of proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. These vesicles are secreted by mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and are responsible for much of the paracrine signaling associated with stem cell therapy, offering a cell-free alternative for regenerative medicine. Research by companies like Lonza focuses on optimizing purification methods, such as size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) and density gradient ultracentrifugation (DG-UC), to maintain the integrity and functional potency of the sEVs. MSC-sEVs have demonstrated regenerative properties in vitro, including promoting wound healing and tube formation in endothelial cells, making them a versatile platform for treating various inflammatory and degenerative conditions.
