Small Mobile Stem Cells (SMS cells) are a novel preparation of human adult stem cells characterized by their small size and enhanced mobility. They are being investigated for their regenerative potential, particularly in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), aiming to promote lung repair by modulating the gene expression of alveolar progenitor cells (especially alveolar type 2 cells). SMS cells have demonstrated the ability to upregulate pro-regenerative pathways and suppress inflammation and necrosis at a molecular level. SORT-COPD (SMS cells) represents the first-in-human, inhaled stem cell therapy approach for respiratory diseases. The cells are delivered directly to the lungs via nebulization in clinical trials, with ongoing research focusing on their safety and biological activity in COPD and related degenerative lung diseases[1][2][3][6].
