Overview

Small molecule α7β1 integrin activators are a therapeutic program developed by Sarcomatrix Therapeutics, targeting various forms of muscular dystrophy. The α7β1 integrin is a major laminin receptor in skeletal muscle that plays a critical role in maintaining the structural integrity of the sarcolemma. By utilizing small molecules to increase the expression or functional activity of this integrin complex, the therapy aims to compensate for the loss of dystrophin or other structural proteins, thereby stabilizing muscle fibers and promoting regeneration. The lead candidate in this program is S-969, and the company has also explored the repurposing of sunitinib for this mechanism. The program is currently in preclinical development for indications including Duchenne, Becker, and Limb-Girdle muscular dystrophies.
