Smallpox Vaccine Lister strain is a second-generation live, unattenuated viral vaccine developed by Sanofi Pasteur. It utilizes the Lister strain of the vaccinia virus, produced in Chicken Embryo Primary (CEP) cell cultures, to confer cross-immunity against variola major and minor (smallpox). As an immunostimulant, the vaccine triggers the production of anti-vaccinia antibodies that provide long-term protection. Although it received its first global approval in the United Kingdom in December 2008, Sanofi Pasteur subsequently discontinued the program following the acquisition of Acambis and its ACAM2000 vaccine. Clinical studies have assessed the long-term safety and persistence of anti-vaccinia antibodies in healthy adults over a five-year observational follow-up period after a single dose.
