Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Smart Oral Insulin is a nanotechnology-based biologic therapy being developed by Endo Axiom for the treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The drug utilizes a quantum-dot nanocarrier platform where insulin is attached to nanoparticles and encapsulated within a protective polymer coating. This coating is designed to shield the insulin from degradation by stomach acid and digestive enzymes, allowing for oral administration. The delivery system is engineered to be glucose-responsive, specifically releasing insulin in the liver only when blood glucose levels are elevated. This mechanism mimics physiological insulin secretion and aims to provide systemic glycemic control while significantly reducing the risk of hypoglycemic episodes, weight gain, and liver fat accumulation.
