SMART02 is an allogeneic cell therapy consisting of cryopreserved human ventral midbrain progenitor dopamine-producing cells (mDAs) derived from pluripotent stem cells (PSCs). Developed by Procella Therapeutics, a business unit of SmartCella Holding AB, the therapy is designed to treat Parkinson's disease by replacing the dopaminergic neurons lost in the brain. The differentiation method, developed by Professor Johan Ericson and his team at the Karolinska Institutet, aims for high efficiency and yield of therapeutic mDA neurons. Preclinical transplantation studies in parkinsonian rat models have demonstrated significant therapeutic performance, suggesting potential as a best-in-class cell product. The program is currently in the preclinical stage, supported by the company's approved GMP manufacturing facilities.
