Overview
SMART03 is a preclinical-stage modified cell therapy being developed by SmartCella Holding AB for the treatment of osteoarthritis, with a specific focus on cartilage regeneration. The therapy utilizes induced mesenchymal stem cells (iMSCs) as a delivery platform for mRNA therapeutic cargo. This approach leverages the innate paracrine anti-inflammatory properties of mesenchymal stem cells while providing sustained expression of regenerative factors encoded by the mRNA to promote cartilage repair and structural regeneration. Preclinical animal models have demonstrated promising outcomes, including both pain relief and the regeneration of cartilage tissue.
