Overview

SmartProbio C is a probiotic dietary supplement investigated for its potential to modulate the gut microbiome and improve clinical outcomes in patients with severe COVID-19. The supplement aims to restore microbial balance by increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria, specifically targeting levels of *Lactobacillus*, *Bifidobacterium*, and *Akkermansia*, while reducing pro-inflammatory *Proteobacteria* and normalizing the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio. By stabilizing the gut-lung axis, SmartProbio C is hypothesized to reduce systemic inflammation (measured by C-reactive protein) and shorten the duration of oxygen dependence and hospital stay in infected patients. It was evaluated in a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial (NCT05474144) to monitor its efficacy in severe respiratory infection contexts.
