Smilax glabra extract is a botanical preparation derived from the rhizomes of *Smilax glabra* Roxb., a plant widely utilized in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) under the name Tufuling. The extract is primarily investigated for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, specifically its ability to inhibit *Helicobacter pylori* infections. Its mechanism of action involves the targeted suppression of urease, a nickel-containing enzyme secreted by *H. pylori* that is essential for the pathogen's survival and colonization in the acidic environment of the stomach. By inhibiting urease, the extract prevents the bacteria from neutralizing gastric acid through ammonia production. The primary bioactive components identified as responsible for this inhibitory effect are the dihydroflavonols astilbin and engeletin.
