Overview

Smilax papyracea, widely known as Brazilian sarsaparilla, is a tropical vine native to the Amazon rainforest whose roots contain a high concentration of bioactive steroidal saponins, notably sarsasapogenin and smilagenin. In the context of biotechnology and pharmacological research, it is valued for its unique mechanism of sequestering gut-derived endotoxins (lipopolysaccharides) within the gastrointestinal tract, thereby preventing their systemic absorption and the subsequent induction of pro-inflammatory cascades. This effect is complemented by the direct modulation of inflammatory mediators like Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). While not an FDA-approved pharmaceutical for specific indications, its extracts are marketed globally within the nutraceutical sector for the management of chronic inflammatory skin conditions, such as psoriasis and eczema, and as an adjunctive treatment for rheumatic disorders. Historically, it served as an important precursor in the industrial synthesis of steroid hormones.
