Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The Smithburn vaccine is a live-attenuated veterinary vaccine used for the active immunization of livestock (including sheep, goats, and cattle) against Rift Valley fever (RVF). Developed in 1949 by serial passage of the neurotropic Entebbe strain of the Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) in mouse brains, it is one of the oldest and most widely used RVF vaccines in Africa. While highly immunogenic and capable of inducing long-lasting immunity after a single dose, the vaccine is associated with significant safety concerns, particularly teratogenicity and abortion in pregnant animals, restricting its use to non-pregnant livestock.
