Overview

SMO1 is a sustained-release intravitreal implant containing 700 μg of dexamethasone, developed by the South Korean company Sangmyung Innovation. It is being developed as a generic version of Ozurdex, an established corticosteroid implant for ophthalmic use. Dexamethasone is a potent synthetic glucocorticoid that acts as an agonist of the glucocorticoid receptor, leading to the suppression of inflammatory cytokines, stabilization of the blood-retinal barrier, and reduction of vascular leakage. SMO1 is currently in Phase 3 clinical development (e.g., NCT06143319) to evaluate its efficacy and safety compared to the reference drug in patients with macular edema secondary to branch or central retinal vein occlusion (RVO). The implant is designed to provide prolonged therapeutic levels of the drug directly to the retina, minimizing the need for frequent injections.
