Drug intelligence / Profile preview
SmofKabiven E is a multi-chamber parenteral nutrition emulsion developed by Fresenius Kabi, designed to provide a comprehensive supply of macronutrients and electrolytes via intravenous infusion. The product consists of three separate compartments containing an amino acid solution with electrolytes, a glucose solution, and a lipid emulsion (SMOF). The SMOF lipid component is a proprietary blend of soybean oil, medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), olive oil, and fish oil, which provides a balanced ratio of omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 fatty acids. The "E" suffix denotes the inclusion of essential electrolytes, including sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, phosphate, zinc, chloride, and acetate. It is primarily indicated for adult patients requiring parenteral nutrition when oral or enteral nutrition is impossible, insufficient, or contraindicated. Clinical research is also evaluating its efficacy in maintaining nutritional status and improving outcomes in cancer patients undergoing intensive treatments like chemotherapy and immunotherapy.
