Overview

Smoked cannabis refers to the inhalation of combusted dried flowers or leaves from the Cannabis sativa plant for medicinal or recreational purposes. The primary active compounds in smoked cannabis are delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is psychoactive and responsible for most of the drug’s mind-altering effects, and cannabidiol (CBD), which is non-psychoactive but may modulate some effects of THC. Smoked cannabis acts mainly by binding to cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) in the endocannabinoid system throughout the brain and body. This interaction can result in analgesic (pain-relieving), antiemetic (anti-nausea), appetite-stimulating, muscle relaxant, and psychoactive effects[2][3][6]. Smoked cannabis has been used to manage chronic pain, nausea/vomiting associated with chemotherapy or other conditions, spasticity due to multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injury, certain forms of epilepsy (though oral formulations are preferred), as well as for palliative care[1][6][10]. However, smoking as a route of administration introduces risks such as respiratory irritation/damage due to combustion products similar to tobacco smoke[5][7][9]. The use of smoked cannabis remains federally illegal in many countries despite state-level legalization in some regions.
