SMP-028

SMP-028 is an investigational small molecule developed by Sumitomo Pharma (formerly Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma) for the treatment of asthma and chronic inflammatory lung diseases. It was evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials, including an inhaled allergen challenge (IAC) study in patients with mild-to-moderate asthma and a pharmacokinetic interaction study with oral contraceptives. Preclinical safety studies in rats identified endocrine toxicity in the adrenal and reproductive organs, which was attributed to the inhibition of neutral cholesterol esterase (nCE), an enzyme critical for steroidogenesis. This toxicological profile was species-specific and not observed in monkeys. The primary therapeutic target for its anti-inflammatory effects in the lungs has not been disclosed, and the program appears to have been discontinued.
