Overview

SMT-571 is a small molecule, oral antibiotic with a novel mechanism of action, developed for the treatment of gonorrhoea. It is specifically designed to target Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the causative agent of gonorrhoea, including multi-drug resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) strains. SMT-571 has demonstrated potent in vitro activity against a broad range of clinical N. gonorrhoeae isolates, showing minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) between 0.064–0.125 mg/L and has not shown cross-resistance with currently or previously used antimicrobials. It was identified using the Discuva Platform to optimize efficacy and resistance-avoidance. SMT-571 is being developed as an oral agent, with preclinical data suggesting activity in urogenital, rectal, and pharyngeal infection sites. The drug has not advanced beyond preclinical development as of the last update.
