Drug intelligence / Profile preview
SMT-B01 is a preclinical-stage cell therapy program developed by Somite Therapeutics for the treatment of metabolic disorders, including obesity and type 2 diabetes. The program utilizes Somite's proprietary AI-driven platform, AlphaStem, to differentiate human pluripotent stem cells into functional brown adipocytes (brown fat cells). Brown adipocytes are specialized for non-shivering thermogenesis, a process that dissipates energy as heat by uncoupling the mitochondrial respiratory chain, primarily through the action of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1). By increasing the population of thermogenically active brown fat, SMT-B01 aims to enhance systemic energy expenditure, improve glucose and lipid metabolism, and restore metabolic homeostasis in patients with metabolic syndrome.
