Overview

SMT-NK is an allogeneic natural killer (NK) cell therapy developed by SMT bio for the treatment of advanced biliary tract cancer (BTC). The therapy consists of highly activated and expanded NK cells derived from healthy donors, designed to leverage the innate immune system's ability to recognize and eliminate malignant cells. SMT-NK exerts its antitumor effects through direct cytolytic activity, involving the release of perforin and granzymes, and the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interferon-gamma (IFN-γ). It is currently being evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials, often in combination with the PD-1 inhibitor pembrolizumab, to enhance immune-mediated tumor clearance in patients with gemcitabine-refractory or advanced biliary tract malignancies.
