Snake venom toxin (SVT) is a bioactive protein/peptide complex derived from snake venom (specifically associated with research from Chungbuk National University, often involving Vipera lebetina turanica) that exhibits potent anti-tumor activity. Its primary mechanism involves the inhibition of Nuclear Factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling, which leads to the up-regulation of death receptors, specifically Death Receptor 3 (DR3) and Death Receptor 5 (DR5). This induction of DRs sensitizes cancer cells to apoptosis and can overcome chemoresistance in various cancer types, including cervical, lung, and breast cancers. Preclinical studies have demonstrated its ability to inhibit tumor growth in vivo and enhance the susceptibility of chemoresistant cells to TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL).
