SNAP-7941 is a selective, high-affinity, non-peptide antagonist of the melanin-concentrating hormone receptor 1 (MCHR1). Its mechanism of action involves competitive antagonism at MCHR1, leading to inhibition of melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) signaling. In preclinical animal studies, SNAP-7941 demonstrated anxiolytic, antidepressant, and anorectic effects, such as reduction of anxiety- and depression-like behaviors and inhibition of food intake. However, its development as a therapeutic agent was discontinued after initial clinical disappointments, and it is primarily used as a research tool and lead compound for the development of more potent MCHR1 antagonists. It can increase extracellular acetylcholine in the frontal cortex, with effects on neurotransmission differentiated from those of classical anxiolytics and antidepressants[1][3][4][5][7][10].
