Overview
SNG1001a is a controlled-release generic drug candidate developed by Bionutrics (later Synovics Pharmaceuticals). It is an oral extended-release formulation of metoprolol succinate, designed to be a generic version of the branded medication Toprol-XL. Metoprolol succinate is a cardioselective beta-1 adrenergic receptor antagonist primarily indicated for the treatment of hypertension, angina pectoris, and stable heart failure. The SNG1001a project utilized proprietary drug delivery technology to achieve bioequivalence with the reference drug, with the company initiating CMC development and biostudies in 2006. The development was aimed at a "first-to-file" Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) to secure marketing exclusivity. However, following the financial decline and 2009 bankruptcy of Synovics Pharmaceuticals, the development of SNG1001a was discontinued.
