SNG1002a

SNG1002a is a controlled-release generic formulation of **glipizide**, originally developed by **Synovics Pharmaceuticals** (formerly **Bionutrics**). It was designed as a generic equivalent to the branded drug **Glucotrol XL**, which is used for the management of **type 2 diabetes mellitus**. Glipizide is a second-generation **sulfonylurea** that stimulates insulin secretion from the pancreas by binding to and blocking **ATP-sensitive potassium channels** (KATP channels) on the surface of pancreatic beta cells. This blockade leads to cell depolarization, an influx of calcium, and the subsequent release of insulin. SNG1002a was developed as part of a pipeline of difficult-to-formulate generic drugs utilizing proprietary oral controlled-release delivery technology to provide sustained therapeutic levels of the drug over a 24-hour period. At the time of its development in 2006, the branded drug belonged to a chemical category with annualized U.S. sales exceeding $800 million.
