Overview

SNIPR-EED is a preclinical CRISPR-based precision antimicrobial therapy being developed by SNIPR Biome. It is designed to selectively target and kill specific pathogenic bacteria, namely *Escherichia coli* and *Klebsiella pneumoniae*, in the gut. The primary indication for SNIPR-EED is Environmental Enteric Dysfunction (EED), a condition characterized by chronic gut inflammation and reduced nutrient absorption common in low- and middle-income countries. The technology utilizes CRISPR-Cas armed bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria) to precisely eliminate the target bacteria without harming the beneficial components of the gut microbiome. SNIPR Biome is developing this therapy with support from a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, particularly focusing on improving EED in pregnant women to prevent negative impacts on fetal development.
