Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sobrerol is a small molecule mucolytic drug with a monoterpene chemical structure, originally discovered as an oxidation product of terpenes. It is classified under ATC code R05CB07 and has been used clinically for over 50 years to treat respiratory conditions characterized by mucus hypersecretion, such as chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and asthma. The drug works by fluidifying mucus, increasing mucociliary clearance, and exerting antioxidant activity. Available in various formulations including oral tablets, granules, syrups, and nebulized solutions, sobrerol is also being investigated for potential neuroprotective applications in multiple sclerosis due to its efficacy in animal models of autoimmune encephalomyelitis.
