SOD2 mRNA refers to messenger RNA encoding the human mitochondrial enzyme superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2), also known as manganese-dependent superoxide dismutase (MnSOD). This enzyme plays a critical role in cellular defense against oxidative stress by catalyzing the conversion of toxic superoxide radicals into hydrogen peroxide and oxygen within mitochondria. Therapeutically, exogenous delivery of SOD2 mRNA using nanoparticle-based systems has been shown in preclinical models to increase SOD2 protein expression, reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS), and mitigate disease processes driven by oxidative stress. Notably, systemic administration of SOD2 mRNA via peptide-based nanoparticles has demonstrated efficacy in reducing aortic dilation and improving survival in mouse models of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) by modulating oxidative damage and inflammation. The approach is being explored for cardiovascular diseases such as AAA and potentially other inflammatory or degenerative conditions where ROS is implicated[1][2].
