Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sodium 3-beta-hydroxybutyrate (also known as sodium beta-hydroxybutyrate or sodium BHB) is the sodium salt form of beta-hydroxybutyrate, a naturally occurring ketone body produced by the liver during ketosis. It is widely used as a dietary supplement to support energy production, enhance cognitive function, and ease the transition into ketosis. Additionally, sodium 3-beta-hydroxybutyrate is utilized as an investigational agent and therapeutic adjunct in clinical research and for rare inborn errors of metabolism, such as multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MADD) and glycogen storage disease type III (GSD III), where fatty acid oxidation or glycogenolysis is impaired. It acts as an alternative energy substrate, particularly for the brain and heart, bypassing glucose metabolism pathways.
