Overview

Sodium Acetate is an electrolyte and a short-chain fatty acid (SCFA). As an electrolyte, it serves as a source of sodium, primarily indicated for addition to large volume intravenous fluids to prevent or correct hyponatremia in patients with restricted or no oral intake. It is also useful as an additive for preparing specific intravenous fluid formulas when the needs of the patient cannot be met by standard electrolyte or nutrient solutions. As a short-chain fatty acid, acetate is a metabolite formed by gut microbiota from complex dietary carbohydrates. It is believed to affect host metabolism, influencing fat oxidation, gut hormones, and potentially offering protection against diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance. It also plays a role in regulating the chromatin landscape and distinct gene expression changes in human colorectal cancer cells. A generic injectable version has been developed by Milla Pharmaceuticals and commercialized by Woodward Pharma Services.
