Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sodium acetate + glucose + electrolytes is a sterile, nonpyrogenic intravenous infusion solution formulated to replenish water, essential electrolytes, and carbohydrates in patients with restricted or insufficient oral intake. The solution typically contains glucose (dextrose) to provide immediate caloric energy and prevent ketosis, alongside a balanced mixture of electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, and chloride to maintain systemic fluid and osmotic balance. Sodium acetate is included as an alkalinizing agent; it is metabolized primarily in peripheral tissues and skeletal muscle to bicarbonate, helping to correct or prevent metabolic acidosis without placing a metabolic burden on the liver, making it a preferred alternative to lactate-buffered crystalloid solutions.
