Drug intelligence / Profile preview
A sterile, isotonic, physiologically balanced **intravenous crystalloid electrolyte solution** containing sodium acetate, sodium gluconate, magnesium chloride, sodium chloride, and potassium chloride. This Baxter product is marketed as **Plasma-Lyte A** and is used in adults and pediatric patients as a source of water and electrolytes for hydration and correction of extracellular fluid and electrolyte deficits, and as an alkalinizing agent. Its pharmacologic effect is replacement of key extracellular electrolytes and volume, while acetate and gluconate are metabolized to bicarbonate precursors that help buffer metabolic acidosis. It is a **small molecule electrolyte combination product**, not a biologic, and is also closely related to electrolyte irrigation solutions used for general irrigation, rinsing, and washing, although the exact drug here is the injectable multi-electrolyte formulation.
