Overview

Sodium acetate, typically administered in combination with sodium propionate and sodium butyrate, is an investigational short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) mixture developed by Maastricht University Medical Center. These SCFAs are naturally occurring metabolites produced by gut microbiota during the fermentation of dietary fiber. In clinical research, they are administered rectally to evaluate their impact on metabolic health in overweight and obese individuals. The mechanism of action involves the activation of G-protein coupled receptors (FFAR2 and FFAR3), which leads to increased fasting fat oxidation, enhanced resting energy expenditure, and stimulated release of the satiety hormone peptide YY (PYY). The goal of these studies is to determine if colonic SCFA modulation can serve as a therapeutic approach for obesity and insulin resistance.
