Overview

TPN Electrolytes is a sterile multi-electrolyte **small-molecule inorganic salt combination** containing sodium acetate anhydrous, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, and sodium chloride for intravenous administration **only after dilution and thorough mixing** in parenteral nutrition solutions. Developed and marketed by Hospira and associated with Pfizer, it is used as an electrolyte additive to concentrated dextrose and amino acid solutions administered by central venous infusion to maintain or restore electrolyte homeostasis in adults receiving total parenteral nutrition. Its mechanism is direct physiologic replacement of essential electrolyte ions including sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, and acetate, thereby supporting normal membrane potentials, neuromuscular function, fluid balance, and acid-base buffering rather than acting through a single discrete molecular target.
